Seed Production Programme
One Seed certification cell established in the department during
1997-1998 is still in operation. The Cell is presently manned by one Seed
Certification Officer and 4 seed Inspectors to look after the Seed
Certification activities. During 2001-2002 this Cell had certified 35 Mt of HYV

Seed Processing Unit
Under the Central
Sector Scheme one Seed Processing Unit of 1TPH (One Tone per hour) Capacity has
also been set up at Mantripukhri to process seeds of
Departmental farm products as well as the produces of the farmers. This will
facilitate the local farmers to get good quality seeds.

So far, the
Department had been released 6(six) rice varieties evolved at Rice Research
Station Wangbal, for the State of Manipur and a
number of KD lines viz., KD-1-1-38, KD-2-7-5, KD-3-7-7, KD-4-2-2, KD-5-2-2,
KD-5-2-8, KD-5-3-14 are widely grown in the farmers’ field,
predominantly, particularly in HYV and Semi low lands/ semi deep areas under
various nicknames viz, KD Amubi,
Paikhomba, KD Naritpi, Korpham, Akhanphou, KD Chakakm, Maming Thondabi etc. The great achievement is that the rice yield
in the state is considerably increased from the traditional productivity level
of about 2 to 3 tonnes per ha to as high as 6 to 7 tonnes per ha.
The
Rice Research Station Wangbal is maintaining a
genetic stock of more than 1200 rice lines, for various breeding purposes.
Evaluation of these lines is going on in this Station.
There
is great potential for evolvement of different rice culture as the rice germplasms occurring in the state possess the valuable and
desired characteristics/ qualities, the world is looking for.
Strengthening
and Re-organisation of Rice Research Station Wangbal is the need of the hour for bringing about
agricultural wonder in the State.
